When using the “Panorama Help” database, or even just using the “View Search”, response to each keystroke is super (super!) slow.
And, the more that is entered into the search bar, the slower it becomes.
Is this because “clairvoyance” is enabled in those search bars?
If so, is there a way to disable it and only perform the search after the “Return” key has been pressed?
This is not a usual complaint. There may be something wrong.
Normally searching the Help should be lightning fast. It’s a bit slower if the Full Text Search option is turned on, but not by much. You can leave this option off, type in your search, then enable Full Text Search. But this doesn’t really make much difference - for example I just searched for the word “relational” and toggling Full Text Search causes at most a one second delay. This is on a 13" M1 Macbook Pro from several years ago.
The View Search window can get somewhat slow when using the Full Source Search option with All Databases + Libraries. When I encounter that, I turn Full Source Search off, type in my search, then turn Full Source Search on again to actually perform the search. Also, if you don’t need to search ProVUE’s internal libraries, switch to just All Databases, or just a particular database. That will greatly speed things up.
It should be lightning fast even on an Intel computer. Maybe slightly slower lightning, but probably not actually perceptibly slower.
I’m afraid I don’t know what could be causing the slow performance you are experiencing. Maybe try rebooting the computer? That is just a wild guess though, I have absolutely zero basis for suggesting that. I assume everything else on the computer seems to be running at normal speed? (otherwise you probably would have mentioned that)
It happens to me too — very occasionally, but has done at least twice in the past week, as far as I can remember (on an M1 Max running MacOS 15.3.1). The Help search box suddenly becomes very unresponsive, taking a couple of seconds to register each keypress before sluggishly responding.
There is the (probably unrelated) problem that, for me, still occasionally affects makes either Help or the Formula Workshop unusable, which was discussed in this thread in 2022.
In all these cases, closing and re-opening the database concerned (Help, Formula Worksop, etc.) has almost always fixed it. Very occasionally it has been necessary to restart Panorama too.
In the last few weeks I’ve has a few random occurrences of a Text Editor object in one of my own databases suddenly refusing to register any keypresses (without, apparently, having lost focus), sometimes fixed by switching to another application then back to Panorama, but sometimes not. Again, that’s probably unrelated and due to something I’ve changed in my own code but, like the above, it’s one of those problems that’s too rare and seemingly random to make it easy to work out what the trigger might be.
