checking for updates told me I was using the latest version.
That’s expected.
About three years ago we had to change the protocol that Panorama X uses to get information about updates from the provue.com server. Because of this, the check for updates feature no longer worked when you were using earlier versions of Panorama X. This was related to the fact that these older versions would tell you that they could not connect to the internet. At the time this happened, we sent an email to every Panorama X customer instructing them to manually perform the update immediately. Because of the urgency, I think we may have ultimately sent multiple emails about this, and it was also discussed extensively on this forum.
Ok, I found the forum post discussing this, it happened in October 2022. So I was pretty close in remembering that it was about three years ago.

Since that Oct 2022 interuption, the Check for Updates feature has worked smoothly, and should continue to do so going forward.
