I do not think that happens when I open a file secretly. I put a statement in the .Initialize procedure that say nsnotify “[dbName] ran .Initialize!”. I do not get that notification.

I don’t know why you think that, but the documentation is correct. The .Initialize
procedure definitely does NOT run when a database is opened with opensecret
.
