The Scroll Bar settings for a matrix can cause columns to completely disappear.

Notice that at one point my shading behind columns has also vanished. And I never see the alternating background colors.

If you want to send me an example database that I can experiment with, I will add it to the bug report database. I’m definitely not going to spend the time to build up an example like this hoping I’ll be able to duplicate your results.

The key step you are missing is to set the Elasticity to None. Then it works. Here’s the file you sent me with the correction.
You probably also want to make a Matrix Header so that the header will also scroll.

As you can see I sort of fixed that, which I did by reducing the opacity of the shading rectangle to 30%. That’s as good as it can get.
