If I bring up “find” by using command/F and put in a person’s name to find the record, I then highlight one of the lines for the record I want to see and then hit the “select” button. When I do that it does not go to the highlighted line but rather the first line in the find listing.

Just double click the line in the Find/Select dialog that you want to go to in the data sheet and you will go to that line.
Find and Select are different operations. Find means you want a specific record to be made active, with no change in which records are visible. Select means that you want just those records that satisfy the condition to be visible. The first of those records will be active.
